Where to begin looking for a classic car? ( 72 chevy nova )

2020.05.13 22:59 Merktality Where to begin looking for a classic car? ( 72 chevy nova )

My dad is a mechanic and car enthusiast. He's currently wanting a 72 Chevy nova, However he works overseas so I'll be the one attempting to get it.
Is there any place or person that could help? I will be watching craigslist and Facebook market fairly often, but if there's something that could give me a higher chance it would be super helpful.
Looking pretty much anywhere in the US, but the closer to Texas the better.

2020.05.08 14:38 fusiongt021 13 Years Later and I'm Back! (Long story if you happen to be bored...)

It's been almost 13 years since I built my last desktop. I got really into it having worked at Intel for a year and getting their employee discounts on processors. The Core 2's had pretty much just come out and I was doing more web/graphic/video work so I built up a Quad Core Q6700 which was insanely fast at the time.
My hands were shaking mounting what I thought at the time was a gigantic CPU heatsink and cooler (only to swiftly get upgraded to a better one that was even larger not too long after). The matching giant full size tower was my first as well and it felt like it required a nuclear reactor to power up. I had researched and read about quiet PCs, but I wasn't sleeping in the same room as it so I didn't need it to be quiet. I caught the "cooling bug" (for lack of a better word) in that I just wanted the best cooling performance, visiting Fry's more often than I can remember, and trying out all types of fans. I could only cool it so much with air and the Core 2 6700 ran so hot that it would blue screen doing video processing on a hot summer day. The Nvidia 8800GTX likely didn't help with the cooling either.
Liquid cooling wasn't really a thing back then, or at least it wasn't readily available like it is now. So naturally to combat the heat of summer, I purchased a whole air condition unit for my small apartment work room. It was the cheap hang on the window kind you could pick up at Home Depot. The computer cooled down instantly along with the people and cats in the apartment!
Long story longer, I went on to build computers for my live-in girlfriend at the time and upgrading my own computer with a brand new one. I gave the previous quad core to my parents so they could check their email and call me monthly asking how to print an email. I still liked the giant nuclear powered tower that I had and so instead of just building a new computer in a new case for myself, I would move all the components of the old computer into a new sleeker case (with enough cooling that it could play Crysis comfortably even though it would be used to check Hotmail). Thinking back, it was just an excuse to I could enjoy making 2 computers (my new one, and moving the previous one to a new case). There was a sense of accomplishment in having a working computer that was literally super cool (inside) and in the end it was because it was fun to do.
The next few years after that I might have upgraded a part or two, and even dabbled into watercooling. The Koolance triple 120mm external cooling was my weapon of a choice and it would sit atop my already humongous tower.

But then came moving into smaller apartments, needing powerful laptops to do contract work at dozens and dozens of tech jobs. I ultimately gave the PC away - I wouldn't part it out like a used car. I felt that laptops were my future because they were good enough to game on (maybe not shooters on Ultra setting, but at least all my favorite Blizzard games). It was nice only having one powerful laptop versus juggling work on both a desktop and laptop.
Each laptop would last around 3 years and that actually felt like a short time. I went through MSI, Origin, and Gigabyte Aero 15x. They were all good laptops with Origin and Gigabyte still in my regular rotation. Odd story or just a coincidence, but the MSI wasn't doing well hardware-wise... it was very temperamental and I tried changing out parts like the hard drive and ram and it hung in there. But literally the day I got my Origin laptop, I had it set up and went to turn on the MSI so I could transfer over some files. It wouldn't turn on. It just died there... it hung on until its replacement came and it never powered on again. I felt very odd about that and it'll rest with my first laptop ever, a used Pentium 3 Dell I got on craigslist in college, in my makeshift laptop graveyard (or storage bin).

Flash forward to now and the quarantine (or shelter-in-place) of COVID-19. I like my Gigabyte Aero15x but it's also starting to show its age. I have been a fan of many YouTube tech channels like Linus Tech Tips and day after day of being at home, occasionally exercising outside, just left my itching to get back into building my desktop.
How could that be? I swore it off over a decade ago. It wasn't practical right? It was big and bulky and I would still need my laptop to take to various work locations. At home I could work on my couch, or put the laptop on the kitchen counter, or bring it to my extra room (ie: the home office) and connect it to external screens, laptop cooler, and usb hubs, and it would act like a desktop. It's perfect as is, no need to upgrade.
My practical side told me all those things that I knew already. That I lived without a desktop for pretty much a decade. I hardly PC game and if I do play, the Aero 15x can handle it fine. I'm not doing much video encoding these days, but if I do it can still handle that (it's definitely faster than my old Core 2 Q6700 after all!)
But then other side of me, perhaps the one watching too much YouTube, was looking at PC building from the outside like I would fish at an aquarium. Like woah, AMD is back and Ryzen 3rd Gen just widened the gap between Intel so much! Nvidia has RTX? No idea what that is but Minecraft is looking snazzy even though I have no interest in playing it. Wow is that freaking RGB lighting on ram? As well as practically everything in a PC?! I had blue and white lights in my old setup, but woah there's a whole rave and disco combined into one in that computer case. Speaking of which, wow is ITX small! And Micro ATX is a nice size as well as I don't need to go that small. (Yea these have been around a while, but I was only interested in huge towers and performance back in 2007)
And liquid cooling. What does AIO stand for? Oh wait they just sell CPU coolers that are as easy to install as a fan? I don't need to worry about getting air out of my loop (also hadn't heard this term before) or have to worry about replacing the liquid once a year? And is that another RGB light on that super small CPU cooler? AIO's are cool but what's the state of custom loops now... Oh man is that hard acrylic tubing... and copper tubing? What the hell, that looks incredible. There are cases that look like fish tanks that are simply clear all over and also huge that look more like pieces of art than it does a computer. How has cable management improved this much?! All you see is a small cpu cooler, wicked pretty ram, and RGB on the *still* massive graphics card? That's so much cleaner now! With no more need for a optical drive, these cases can really be unique and not require a front panel! And oh man, forget 3.5" drives, it's all about teeny tiny M.2 and 2.5" SSD drives.

Needless to say, I got the bug. I researched practically every component and justified it by not going with a massive tower that I said a decade ago that I didn't need. But I never said I couldn't use a small/medium form factor PC! So after much research (which I must say is one of the best parts to any hobby), I bit the bullet and put my order in. If you've reached this far in the post, boy did this thing get out of hand, but here is my new setup. Not looking to humblebrag or anything, just will all be work expenses as I'll still be using it for work and will try to dabble in streaming and YouTube videos as well!

- Case: Thermaltake V21
--- This medium cube form factor just really spoke to me. It's not the flashiest but I like how modular it is and how I can fit quite a lot of fans in. I still may upgrade to a Corsair 280X but I'm enjoying the V21 now.
- Motherboard: ASRock X570M Pro4
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x (cooled with Corsair H115i)
- Graphics: EVGA RTX 2070 Super FTW 3
- Ram: G. Skill Trident Z 32gb DDR4 3600
- Drives: Samsung 970 EVO M.2 2280 (1TB) and WD Blue 3D 2TB SSD
- Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3
- Fans: I had purchased a few Corsair blue 140mm fans but after seeing how beautiful RGB is in person (with the cpu cooler, ram, and graphics card) I may end up going full PC master race and get the Corsair LL140. I do like the subtle blue fans I have surrounding the beautiful RGB interior, but I never had software to control RGB before so I would like to try that.
--- The current intake/outtake setup I have is 2x140mm front intake, 1x140mm back outtake, 1x140mm bottom intake, and 2x140mm top radiator push outtake. The V21 case orientation I have it in now let's me put 2 bottom fans in but only one side is ventilated. I may end up putting holes in the bottom half of the case so I can get an extra 140mm fan in.

The first game graphics intensive game I played after setting everything up was Doom Eternal. I was a big Doom and Doom 2 fan when I was a kid; but when Doom 3 came around it was way too hard (and busting out the flash light every room was a bit too horrifying). Doom Eternal isn't the most cpu/gfx intensive game there is but I know my laptop wouldn't be able to play it this nicely! It even streams to my Nvidia Shield TV in the living room perfectly.

In conclusion, it's been a long road since I built my last PC. I'm not going to lie, I missed it. And I didn't know how much I missed it until I got the itch the past few months. Finally getting all these parts through the mail (which Newegg has been great on, delivering way faster than Amazon) and installing them has been an absolute joy. Speaking of Newegg, they are so good in remembering all your previous orders that until this year, my last order through them was in 2009!
I couldn't be happier with my build (though I'm sure you experts out there would know better alternatives to what I chose). I have to say, and I mentioned it earlier, that making a PC now is so much easier without having to make room for 3.5" harddrives or optical drives. Instead of worry about those, cases can be so much more interesting and I really like them hiding PSU's behind the main light show in the front. Cable management is so much easier when there's a hidden layer behind the motherboard.
I'll likely not done yet as I'll be continuing to tweak my setup with RGB fan/lighting (which btw, holy crap fans cost a lot now!) I'm not in a rush because I know waiting a little longer will give me more joy to opening up the case and tinkering with it some more.
It's been a long wait but I'm so happy to be back to building PCs!

2019.12.21 17:00 Shashkabu MAX $1,500 Productivity + Light Content Creation / Gaming

I bought a Macbook Pro 16" a couple days ago for $2900 and ended up returning that garbage after my photo app crashed. I see things clearly now and realize how much power I can have for a fraction of the price. I have a build spec'd out based on my needs but I wanted to run it by you guys before I send it on the purchase.
>**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**
Majority of my time on this PC will be using Excel, Outlook, trading software, videos, music, and OneNote. I'm hoping to have multitask capability for this.
Other times I will be using this PC for picture and video storage, picture and video editing, light programming, and occasional gaming. I only play single player games here and there (ex. Sekiro, Cyberpunk, some RTS games).
>**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**
$1,500 but do not want to spend more than I need. The rest of my budget is going into a nice ass chair.
>**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**
Within a week or two (after the holidays)
>**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**
High quality open headphones + amp. Currently eyeing beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm with a FiiO E10K DAC/AMP.
Case. I am pretty sold on the NZXT H510 and following a white aesthetic. I am willing to spend a little extra in the end for aesthetic.
Aesthetic accessories (low priority)
Do not include a mouse and keyboard.
>**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**
USA. No microcenter nearby. Planning to buy everything from Amazon with Prime membership (free shipping) + 5% back on purchase.
>**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**
Not a high priority but I am looking for monitor recommendations. Ideally I want a monitor that has a high refresh rate for the occasional gaming while also having great picture for content creation. I would say I am pretty 50/50 on those use cases. Currently eyeing the Pixio PX277.
I have an HP 25es to use in the meantime (roast me I know)
>**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**
If necessary, sure.
>**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**
My plan is to start with 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM. The plan is to add a second 1 TB SSD and 16GB ram so the case will need to accommodate that future upgrade. I believe the NZXT H510 I am eyeing can accommodate, can anyone double check to confirm?
>**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**
I could not care less about LED/RGB. However I am willing to pay some extra for aesthetic (ex. white RAM, white graphics card, etc.) without sacrificing performance.
>**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**
Yes, I'll purchase windows and pay yearly for Microsoft Office since I plan to use it a majority of the time.
>**Extra info or particulars:**
Here is my first pass at this build. Some thoughts below:
Ryzen 2700X - thought process is this is super cheap for 8 cores, more than enough power that I need means an upgrade to Ryzen 3XXX is not justified, and heard about BIOS nightmares with Ryzen 3XXX. Let me know if there is a strong recommendation to go for new gen Ryzen or Intel. Also like the idea that it comes with a cooler and saving money by not having to buy a separate one with Intel.
GTX 1660 - to provide some context, I'll probably play 1 or 2 games a year. I believe this graphics card will provide enough performance for 144hz single player gaming at high graphics. I might be able to snag a RTX 2070 for $200 on Craigslist.
Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 / FiiO E10K USB DAC and Headphone Amplifier - I will be listening to music/podcasts/videos 99% of the time I am at my PC. I don't want to cheap out in this area. Let me know if you guys have any better recommendations!

2019.12.02 23:53 jack224422 A Theater Experiment

Hey Everyone, I had some ideas over Thanksgiving and I would like to try to make them happen, I'd like to create an artistic experiment in theater, below is the post that I created for Craigslist, please feel free to DM me if you are interested, have any questions, or really feel compelled to tell me what a terrible idea this is.
I am looking for a group of people to participate in an artistic theatrical experiment. Nothing is decided and will all depend on the people who reply to this posting, but what I would like to do is form a group of people who would come together where each person would write their own original play or musical and everyone in the group would participate in one way or another to help put it on, performing one show per month for as many months as there are people in the group.
This would be an experiment in art, with no backing from any group, we would be completely on our own, but we would be creating our own stories. Make no mistake, this is not performing at the Nova and we will not be getting any Tony Awards for what we do, but I believe that the people here have stories to tell, and that if given the chance, the community should be given the opportunity to hear them, I hope that this is that chance.
I’m looking for people who have a story to tell, big or small. Are willing to perform in front of others. Have theatrical skills or are willing to learn theatrical skills. Previous experience while not necessary would certainly help. People who understand the phrase, “Anything worth doing, is worth doing badly” applies here not because we are trying to make bad theater, but that that we are going to make theater regardless as to whether it ends up good or not.
EDIT for some good questions: Whose your target market? There is currently no target market, as the source material ( your stories) are not written yet) Is there age restrictions? 18 y/o How long do you want to allow each person to speak? Great question, to which I don’t have an answer as the format of performances is not decided, originally it would be each story got is own performance so the answer would have been as long as it takes to tell, however as it stands now, we are looking at doing multiple shorter stories in a single performance, still not decided as we don’t know how many people want to submit scripts Is this going to be presented in public? Yes, absolutly Do you have the dates of the event in mind? Not without having an inkling of what would or not work for people interested Do you have a venue? No, venue will be determined by the content of the stories and number of performances and any other number of unknowns What is your background in theater? I have a Bachelors in Technical Theater, with working experience since 2012 Do you have production and directing experience? Yes

2018.09.01 15:50 IEscapedFromALab The Real Estate in Florida is Getting Bought Out and It Isn't By Investors

“The Floridian” was one of many former sleezy art deco motels that had been turned into “Section Eight” apartments in the middle of nowhere, western Palm Beach County, Florida. I moved in for free, permanently, about five years ago when it was still a motel after I got a bargain from the owner. He needed some favors in a hurry at the time and he had plenty of vacancies. It’s about an hour away from West Palm Beach proper, closer to the Everglades than the beach and surrounded by wetlands and a single road that led to a partially dead shopping mall and a city famous for absurd behavior. My name is Ted McCluskey, and this place is my home.
Calling it isolated was an understatement, but I love the green and blue plains that surrounded me. Not many people realize this but most of the southern part of Florida is a massive expanse of Everglade that humanity has been punishing the shit out of lately. I have borderline personality disorder, so something with a hint of stability and isolation seemed like a great deal at the time.
I spent several years barely working and wandering the empty parking lots, enjoying the weed in my hand and the feeling of security in my mind. That was, until the first new neighbors moved in. I don’t know if my home was being scouted for potential property flipping or if I just didn’t catch wind of the change in the neighborhood. For years the parking lots were empty, but one morning on my way to check out the college chicks at the nearest excuse for a mall, I noticed a new car. I ignored it, and the man with a fake tan who owned it, but three days later there were several moving trucks and sedans scattered across the vast parking lots. And a knock on my door.
Two fat ham-like people and a college-aged girl with long brown hair and bright blue eyes were at my door. They seemed painfully suburban. The woman was wearing a neon pink dress with pineapples in tuxedos. The girl was thin as a twig and looked exhausted but otherwise seemed normal enough, wearing a weathered Quicksilver shirt. The two parents didn’t react at all to me only wearing boxers and smoking a joint, much less the blaring Ariel Pink in the background. The girl looked scared out of her wits.
“Good morning buddy! We’re new to the neighborhood and wanted to introduce ourselves. I’m Kyle Polk and this is Linda and Jessica. We just moved here from Los Angeles to save money.” He waved, and I saw strange wounds on his wrist.
I slammed the door shut at that point, checking the window after a moment to see if it was safe. They were moving in four doors away. My home didn’t need neighbors. For years I had only worked a few hours a week, smoked and grew pot and shrooms and hung out on my stoop. I often turned to using the different apartment numbers to order drugs from Alphabay safely. The spectacular amount of vacancies made it a nice, shitty place to live. It was one of those places where the “kitchen” never worked but I knew I would miss it one day anyways. The thought of losing all of it made my pulse rise, and I realized the threat of a panic attack was imminent.
I guess it’s kind of hard to describe what the start of a panic attack feels like, but, suffice to say, "pretty bad" will have to work. My heart was pumping, and I knew that if it continued to I was going to lose control and freak the fuck out again, maybe even break something or hurt myself. With cops around that could mean a brutal beating for being mentally ill. Thankfully my arsenal was close at hand. I tuned on the lava-lamps, a tradition of mine since landing in the room filled with 1970s crap. A couple Xanax, some whisky, music and weed and I was right as rain again. Music makes me feel better and a few chems can help me get into it. I started feeling drowsy and heavy in the limbs in no time.
I only realized as my eyes were closing that his polo shirt was inside out. For some reason that and the frightened look in the girl’s eyes bothered the shit out of me. I kept telling myself the more logical conclusion; that she must have been creeped out by being dragged into a potential conversation with me. Regardless of any questions I had at the time, I had to deal with the unbelievable stress of a mood swing.
The next afternoon, after I got home from my only mildly shitty appliance repair gig I picked from Craigslist, there were three new vans. Two of them were U-hauls and one of those smaller ford vans that get used to deliver pizzas and stuff. A lady with long black hair was pushing a cart filled with boxes off her U-Haul and towards her apartment when she seemed to suddenly turn towards me. I pretended not to notice her, not wanting to risk another conversation as I walked up to my apartment. There was a yellow coffee stained note on my door from the landlord asking me to come by his office. I could practically smell the body odor just from the note.
As I got around to the southernmost building, I saw something that made me do a double take before I reached Jessie. The family that had knocked on my door earlier was moving in, but into an entirely different apartment. I tried to make it look like I wasn't watching, but stumbled and almost fell when I realized that the wife was different, now a slightly older redhead with a pixie haircut. Probably just helping this woman move in, but it gave me the creeps. They all turned to look. As the adults went inside, the teen girl seemed to try to stifle a wave. She quickly went back to carrying lamps from the U-Haul.
Normally I’d give it a week or two to see if he really needed to see me or what, but I was awfully curious as to what the fuck was going on and decided to take the time out of my normally busy schedule to go see him. His office and home, both of which stunk of whiskey and whatever the opposite of soap was, were located on the far end of the four long apartment buildings surrounding two drained pools and a parking lot that composed “The Floridian”. It was on the third floor out of three and it was one of the few places that had a view of the ocean from its balcony.
I knocked and the door slid open as its owner told me to come in. Jesse Price was dressed a little better than normal, with a neatly pressed but still badly stained button-down brown shirt and recently laundered cargo shorts. He looked even more rail thin than normal and his long, poorly styled hair was all combed over to one side. He sat behind an ancient solid Dade-Pine roll-top desk. All of the furniture was ancient and battered, but extremely well-crafted wood. It made the dark and smoky room look like a pirates cabin. The powerful aroma of sweat and abused substances the man normally cloaked himself in mingled violently with an incredible amount of cologne.
“Hey man, you alright?”
He gave me a slightly nervous glance that I didn’t understand. I had pretty bad mood swings, but I had gotten a lot better about taking a walk instead of letting them play out.
“Uhm…So, we got some new neighbors? Shit man, when it rains it pours, am I right?”
He looked down at his desk nervously and took out his vape pen. He was convinced that no one would ever notice that the cartridge it contained was clearly not a nicotine filled one. He took a long, deep drag and held it for a moment.
“So, seventeen so far. They haven’t all moved in yet. They seem to be people from Royal Palm, that wealthy spot There’s gonna be more though. I can’t tell where they’re all coming from, or why a fuck ton of people are suddenly interested in renting shitty cheap apartments in a place that doesn’t even have tourist traps anymore, but I have an answering machine filled with missed calls all of a sudden.”
My eyes must have shot out of my head, because he offered me his vape pen with the most sympathetic face I could imagine him wearing. I took a long hit.
“You’re safe, even though you don’t own the land or anything, but, yeah, we’re getting new neighbors, and it’s hard to tell how many of them or why.”
“God they’re fucking weird…” I drifted off, thinking of the pudgy smiling man and his terrified daughter. Jesse raised an eyebrow to me and shrugged.
“So far none of them are Section 8, so I guess they just want cheap mortgage payments. I’m willing to sell pretty much all of them except mine and that first one you stayed in when you got here.” Jesse said of the weird Roaring 20s themed room I briefly loved before a mold issue set in. It wasn’t normal for people who didn’t have a severe mental illness or other serious problem to be on Section 8, which is like Welfare for rent, so these weren’t the normal temporary boarders and ex-cons we got from Palm Beach.
“Weird.” I began to feel like he had no more new information for me and I desperately wanted to get out of the conversation and the room.
“Listen, there’s nothing weird about these people, the thing is, property values are rising and I hate to put it this way, but it could really be my ship sailing in. I wanted to ask you, do you think you could avoid doing anything…you know…” He squinted his face to show the difficulty of trying to convey his worries without offending me and sending me into a mood swing.
“Weird?” I asked, knowing that it was a bit broad of a word in Florida. He winced, knowing that he wasn’t the patron saint of normalcy to begin with.
“Yeah. I’ll find a way to make it worth your while, just help me out here. This guy, "John Gamon", weird guy, he's an agent or...something that seems to be sending people my way. I'm letting them move in while I wait on their bank...they sent reps over but I can't seem to find them on the internet...No idea how he talked people into an hour-long commute to West Palm Beach, but I'm worried he might be happier with me out of the way. Technically this is all owned by a corporation that my dad started and financially speaking, it's on pretty thin ice. A few new residents could make this work, maybe even spruce up the place like I've been meaning to do. Or maybe he'll just make the land cheaper through eminent domain or some other bullshit."
He sighed deeply and stared at his desk for a second, giving me a second to react. I could tell he had planned this discussion in some detail, probably hoping to avoid one of my flip-outs. The bad part first explained as part of a larger narrative, then a lot of information to consider, a combo that usually works as long as I'm allowing it to.
"Yeah, a lot of good and bad things."
“This guy scares the shit out of me. He’s been poking around in more than just the property and I’m worried he’ll find something he can use against me. He’s coming by later to look through some others. There are some options if you want to permanently buy yours, you know, on the super-cheap, of course?”
I nodded to him and took the card he was offering. Unlike Jessie’s grease stained notes, this one carried a light hint of cologne, despite the difficult time it endured in Jessie’s wallet. I didn’t want to live around a bunch of people anyways and would plan on leaving if too many moved in. It felt like a horrible eviction, despite the invitation to stay. Without another word I nodded and walked out, jamming my headphones into my ears and blaring some old Bossa Nova. This was something he was used to, and pretty much on the optimistic side of my behavior. I went home and got mega-wrecked. I had long since turned to using etizolam, which is technically legal in the U.S. despite being very similar to Xanax, allowing me to buy it at about 25 cents a pill. For comparisons sake, Xanax is about 5 bucks for a pill of comparative strength.
Thanks to some natural anti-psychotic effects, I started thinking rationally about the situation. I began to consider this “Ted McClusky” guy. Maybe I could barter Jessie for actual ownership of the apartment, or some kind of stake that could improve my situation. These thoughts continued until I took another etizolam and some other stuff and passed out.
I don’t know what time I woke up, but some time late at night, really fucking late, I groggily semi-came to. I didn’t remember anything from the day before, one of the great blessings of Etizolam. I heard a strange grinding sound directly out of my room. Still badly hungover from the small handful of drugs I had popped, I slowly opened the door of my apartment.
Four doors away from where I carefully poked my head was the ham-faced woman who had knocked on my door the day, Linda Polk. She was wearing a white blouse that was nicely pressed, but not tucked in, to khakis that had several scorch marks with the patterns of an iron.
“You okay?” Dread filled me the second the words left my mouth. Her head whipped in my direction, sending droplets of blood sailing. She smiled, revealing a set of teeth that looked like shattered bits of glass sticking from the gore of what was once her mouth.
“You have a lovely store!” She gurgled and hacked. She ground her teeth furiously, letting one pop like corn in a microwave deep inside her mouth as she turned her enormous bulk in my direction. Her feet slapped against the concrete as she sprinted at me. I slammed the door shut and heard gurgling suburbanite chatter as she came to a halt near my front window.
“Wha a niy doog!” She was vomiting random phrases, greetings, pleasantries, through her annihilated mouth. After a while, I poked a hole in the blinds to get a look at her from the side window and she was walking towards the end of the balcony. When she reached it she simply turned away and walked in the other direction blankly until the encountered the other end of the floor, which caused her to repel from the wall and towards the stairs again. I don’t know how long she was there, I grabbed my tool bag, a crowbar, some drugs and jumped out the joke of a rear window. Without transportation, I couldn’t just leave, but staying in that apartment wasn’t a real option.
It wouldn’t be the first time I slept in a different apartment. Sometimes I broke into one of the many abandoned apartments just to get a change of pace. They were almost all uninhabited and I was usually the one doing “maintenance” anyways. Each one had an entirely different get-up from a different era. A few, like mine, were from the 90s. Some still had the relatively pristine shag carpet, paisley print and functioning lava lamps of the 60s and 70s. Others had crystal clear Lexan tables, white leather, lots of mirrors and other trappings of the 80s (including cocaine lines on a mirror I once enjoyed for the same purpose as tribute). Some even had stuff that hinted at earlier origins.
The one I chose that night was the first place I had been permitted to crash in, back when Jessie, needed help with a heroin problem (I don’t mean getting clean). I later moved to my current home because that grand old dame one had a mold issue, but I was still fond of it. It had a gigantic gold colored glass mirror wall with different tints of glass forming what was once a sunrise. Art-Deco from the 20s and 30s adorned every wall. Much of the glass was now broken, the metal tarnished and rusty. It felt comforting to sleep there, as if being able to do as I pleased gave me some level of control over my home again.
When I woke up the next morning, I realized that I didn’t want any of those creeps to have this particular room. I decided to stick weld the door shut, so that I could come and go through the shitty attic system. I decided to go talk to Jessie and get a clear list of all of my options and ideas he might have. And also, to check if he was aware of just how fucked up his new neighbors might be. When I got to his office, however, I noticed immediately that the blinds were pulled up. The glass was spotless. A man with a tight blonde haircut and blue eyes who definitely wasn’t Jessie sat in an office that had been freshly renovated. I wasn’t exactly in the mood for a conversation with one of those fucking creeps.
It was time to take an extended walk. That was my last seemingly solid option. Mood swings are a lot like a panic attacks, their less intimidating cousin, in that you get a lot of energy you can't really channel easily. Listening to music tends to be distract me from the emotional momentum and I could feel my heart pounding almost as fast as the drums keeping up with João Gilberto. The apartment complex/motel was surrounded by marshlands, hemmed in by mangroves, pond apples and sea grapes. Normally I would walk around the complex whenever I got stressed out, but there was now another U-Haul pulling in close to my apartment, so I went around the outer rim of the three parallel buildings so I could see some wildlife in the stretches of flat wetlands around us.
The parking lot had a relatively steep drop down to the marsh thanks to a shoddy concrete foundation. I have walked, half slid down to the shifting mangrove-choked waterways that surrounded my home. The land and the water were utterly even and interspersed. forming what looks like massive puddles interrupting a dense forest. The fact that some of them were incredible deep wasn’t immediately obvious. It was like traveling to a different planet, and it felt good to be unable to easily see the apartment blocks through the dense wall of green. After about half an hour, I could feel my heart getting back into a relatively safe range.
This was when I realized that there was no longer any sound coming from around me. Now, animals normally hit the deck when they hear humans rummaging through their neighborhood to begin with, but I didn’t even hear birds, the warning alarms of the animal kingdom. I decided to go a little deeper, to clear my mind of what could have easily been a spell of paranoia. They come and go. With every step, the absence of fish, rodents, even insects became more apparent. My heart began pounding again.
I couldn’t tell you how long it took, but eventually I got to an area I had only been to once or twice before, where the water suddenly gets deep. I didn’t mind stepping in it up to my knee or so, but a small clearing that was normally above the ankle seemed to have been turned into a fish nest, or a circular crater in the sand that fish make with their tails. Except this one was about eight feet wide. The clearing looked strange, larger than it was previously. I reached into my pocket for my vape pen, which thank God had a fresh cartridge of THC. As I surveyed the trees I noticed that the clearing was quite a bit larger, and a lot more water. Some of the trees seemed to be just tufts of greenery without bark sticking out of the water, which is unusual as fuck for mangrove. I treaded along the sand and took off my shoes to go into some water and get a better look.
The tree wasn’t short at all. It had been *pulled* into the fucking ground. The ground itself was about six feet away from where it was supposed to be. The mangrove was massive and I could see a lot of it, but the ground below had been pulled down, almost like a sinkhole. Except along the sides, instead of jagged rock from collapsed limestone, there was just a perfectly smooth surface of sand. The massive mangrove was sticking out of it, leaving only the very top of the tree sticking above the water. I couldn’t even see the bottom. But the branches and roots mixed far below, they had been bleached white and smooth and entangled each other, making the plant look like a sculpture of an insane orgy.
Which was quite enough for me, actually.
I quietly went back, put my shoes on and left right away. Something was horribly wrong in my home. The trek back was long and wet and I had every intention of taking a hot shower upon reaching my shitty apartment. After a while, I could see the former mega-motel parking lot rising up from some distance, its concrete foundation rudely jutting deep into the natural marshland. The earth pushed up around it like a swollen wound.
The moment I reached the parking lot hedgery I noticed someone walking away. A fat little woman scurried into her apartment as I climbed the embankment. One or two more new vehicles were parked along the way. Some fresh blood was splattered across a soft pink Ford Focus coupe. I did my best to pretend I didn’t notice them, but something made me feel like their inhabitants were watching me.
The next hour was spent getting high as fuck. Escapism is a perfectly effective way of dealing with stress temporarily and I needed to feel grounded. That was a lot of weird shit for one day. So, I went for sedatives, etizolam of course but also a little Roxicodone I had picked up. Pretty good stuff, it’s great for situations like this. Six beers and some weed later and I was almost able to address the problem like a sane person, thinking about where I would move and how I might be able to minimize my time in the area. I knew I couldn’t stay there any longer, even if those people were normal and I was just imagining shit, which was clearly not entirely the case.
I drifted off early and slept late, even for an unemployed person. I dreamed of nothing and felt exhausted when I woke up to the sound of light knocking on my door. I opened the door and the teenaged girl shot past me and into my room before I could say anything. She had been sobbing.
“You... you have to help me. Please, you have to help me.”
She grabbed my shirt and slammed the door behind me.
“That wasn’t my dad, not anymore. You have to help me, we have to get out of here. Do you have a car?”
She was speaking urgently and tears were welling up in her eyes.
“What? No, no, I don’t, wait, what the fuck?”
“These people aren’t normal, that’s not my dad anymore. They take them to the water and force them in, and when they come back up they’re all fucked up. That was my dad, and he’s been able to snap out of it sometimes, but they took him to the water again and, I…”
She began sobbing powerfully, shuddering. She grabbed my arms as hard as her bony hands could allow and stared at me with horrified eyes.
“I think he’s dead…I think he’s dead.” She took a step back from me and half sat, half collapsed on an orange plastic chair.
“Your dad?” She looked confused at this.
“No! That fucking monster who’s been holding me captive! I hit him with a lamp, I have some car keys, but I don't know which car they go to. Can you steal that other guys car? I think they got him anyways."
"Jessie? What the fuck did they do to him? I didn't see his car out there today. Whose keys do you have and why don't we use them? And what the fuck happened to you?
She shook her head and looked down, visibly upset by what she had seen.
"I didn't see. But two of those things grabbed him after I tried to get him to make a break for it. I don't know which car these keys are for, when they're around each other they don't talk like we do. First they killed my mom. Then they killed my real dad. Then they forced me to act like that" She sobbed and shook violently. "We used to live outside Port Charlotte, my dad built a house right on the water. That's where they come from. They forced us to walk. " The last word turned into a moan as she sunk into the chair, no longer maintaining any kind of eye contact.
"Jesus Christ...where do they come from? Who are they?"
"I don't know...They just wander, in the swamp, until they find a place. If more of them come, they force you to dig in the water to find something...something in the roots. They aren't in control anymore...when they start breaking down, and they can't act normal anymore, they go crazy"
"My dad wasn't like that, but eventually they took him to the swamp. When he came back, we hoped everything was going to be ok..."

I really didn't want to know what the fuck that meant. I grabbed an old chefs knife and handed her a broken bedpost I was supposed to have sanded and replaced about two months ago. She weakly wrapped her hand around it and barely tried to slow it as it dropped to the ground, but she picked it up again and stood up with something resembling determination. I walked slowly to the back window, hoping those fucking creeps were slow learners. I looked out at the back lot and made sure it was empty before getting ready to climb down.

"My name is Jeanette. Jeanette Pauley...if I don't get out of here and you do..."
I nodded solemnly and put my hand on her shoulder to let her know I meant it. "I'm Ted and we are going to get out of here."
The waifish girl nodded and quickly followed behind me, slowly climbing our way down three drainpipes as quietly as possible. She tapped my shoulder once we got to the bottom, putting a finger to her lips but showing me the car keys before directing me to the rear lot. We readied our weapons, but didn't see anyone, not even any lights on.
I paused a moment before getting ready to turn the corner, hoping to God that nothing was behind that corner waiting for us. The knife suddenly felt dull and flimsy. I pressed my back against the concrete wall and slowly moved around the corner. I thought it was the wind, but something told me the low sound I heard was a human voice. Sure enough, an old man in a UM shirt with a cane was walking in the direction of the middle building in the dead center of the parking lot, blood pouring down his face and neck as he gibbered aimlessly.
I wondered if I could creep around him, but I didn't get to wonder long. His head shot in my direction when I thought I would have been out of his field of vision.

"What a cute puppy! What's his name!?" Or at least it was probably what he said, as he no longer had the ability to form consonants due to a badly mangled mouth.

I head the bones in the mans leg crack as he ran to us, but it didn't slow him down. His foot broke, then the ankle, with bones sticking out. It collapsed in sideways, forcing him to run on the side of his ankle, but it didn't seem to change the excited look on his face. I could hear running footsteps from behind us as well, and gibbering. Jeanette moved to my left and flanked the old man, I took a step back, hoping they couldn't keep silent and that there weren't some sneaking up on us.
Jeanette swung, and the old man's brutalized face largely collapsed. I stabbed him, pushing the knife through what felt like the toughest, most sinewey set of pork ribs I had ever encountered, and he dropped to the ground. I leaned down to get the knife, hearing the gibbering of a fat woman and a skinny young man gaining on us from the parking lot we had just left when the old man grabbed my hand. I tried to ignore the gurgles that sounded like he was thanking me as I yanked the blade free.

I got back up barely in time for the young Hispanic man, who was unfortunately in great shape aside from his mouth, which he had chewed into a bone and blood strewn pulp.

"Hi, which aisle for canned goods?!" He almost screamed as he swung one of his fists at me. Despite seeing it coming, years of drug use had made me a little slower than I'd like and his fist connected to my jaw. I felt unbelievable pain fire through my face and neck as a terrible crack rang out in my ears. I heard Jeanette scream and had a brief second to see the fat woman on top of her, pinning her down as blood ran from the woman's mouth onto her face, before the young mans fist blotted out the world.

When I came to I could feel my hands pinned behind me by something sharp that pinched when I tried to move. Jeanette was across from me, covered in blood and not moving, while Jessie sat at the other end of a small clearing, covered in blood, awake but not moving. It was dead at night and we were far enough from civilization to see the stars, which I suddenly didn't find reassuring. The distance I had spent my life cultivating was now a problem.

"Jessie? Jeanette?" Jessie's eyes moved in my direction, but then seemed to roll to the back of his head, as if he were put in sudden and horrible pain. He seemed to be focused on something.

"Jessie, what the fuck happened?" My mouth was filled with pain and blood at the attempt to speak, but Jeanette seemed to come to at the sound of my voice. Jessie tried to look in my direction and shake his head, but didn't say anything. I heard splashing approaching from the mangroves that surrounded us and suddenly felt myself being dragged through increasingly deep puddles. I could hear Jeanette crying. That was when I began fighting a bit. I kicked, thrashed and struggled until I finally turned over and saw the young Hispanic man and a massive fat woman in a blue and red blouse stood over me. This time they were utterly silent. I saw the brown fist coming and this time managed to make it to the side, hearing it smash into the mud behind me. Suddenly the fat woman ran towards Jessie and Jeanette.

I kicked and got him in the balls, but it didn't do much. Thankfully, when he corrected his position to punch me again I managed to kick the inside of his leg hard enough to bring him down. Whatever was wrapped around my wrists was hurting the shit out of me, but I twisted my hand again anyways. I could feel the flesh from my left hand rip like a plastic bag, but I felt something come free as I kicked the guy again. He managed to get up and kick me in the ribs, and I felt the air shoot out of me.
He was just about to get me again when Jessie managed to reach him. I don't know how he got free, but I saw what was holding me back: a thick vine with horrible barbs was dangled from the ripped flesh of his hands as he kicked the man in the head while he was down. I managed to get up and join him, but my hands were still bound. After he stopped moving so much, Jessie managed to help pluck the barbs out of my skin and then we both helped Jeanette. The fat woman was lying face down, seemingly drowned in a relatively deep puddle. She must have not noticed Jessie getting free.
Once and again, Jeanette put her finger to her lips, pointing out into the dark behind us and shaking her head with fear. Suddenly I noticed splashing noises making their way to us, Jeanette managed to duck behind a tree cluster and into a heavy bush while I hid behind a thin group of trees that effectively formed a small wall with a crack. I couldn't see Jessie.
Four people entered the clearing, all of them stared at the bodies. They waited a moment, then slowly went to both bodies, leaning down and smelling them before slowly picking them up and dragging them to the massive body of water that had once been a normal deeper part of the wetlands. First they dropped the fat woman into the water, the the young man.
Then the four strangers dispersed, walking in seemingly random directions. They seemed to almost ricochet, not seeking a way around objects or a certain course, but reacting away from them and walking in a different direction. I could see Jeanette cover her mouth in horror as a woman, maybe in her 50s, walked near her, with a blank look on her face and blood staining her disheveled blouse. Unknown to this woman, Jeanette was crouched in a heavy bush that thankfully seemed to cover her, muffling her crying with her hand.
I was worried about her breaking her silence when suddenly I heard a bunch of twigs break and all four of the strangers looked off to my far left. Jessie had managed to get behind several trees, but in order to keep his body hidden he had to pin himself up there. He fell, landing in thick swamp bush.

"No, no, no, you son of a bitch! NO!" He screamed as they closed on him. "Please, no, please!"
I could see him flailing, but more were coming. As Jeanette and I watched, they brought him, kicking and screaming, to the water, where they put him in.
"Please don't fucking do this! Please don't fucking do this!" Those were the last words I ever heard from Jessie, as a woman I later learned was once Jeanette's mother placed her hands on his head and slowly pushed down. Then Jessie was dragged below by something I could not see. The people who had held him down, now seven, stood up and began to walk away in the same disorganized way they had previously used, walking away from any obstacles and not having any clear direction, but leaving the clearing quickly anyways.
I don't know how long we waited there, but it was more than a few minutes until I finally saw Jeanette wave and then motion for me to follow her. Before I did I took a few cautious steps forward instead. I had to see what had happened to my friend. Some part of me thought I could still save him. It was too dark to see much, but I saw him alright. The roots were no longer at the bottom of the massive pit, a small group had stretched upwards. Jessie was still just below the surface and I could see the glistening white roots penetrating his flesh all over his body before I turned and followed the shocked Jeanette. They looked like they were either pumping something into him.

We saw a few as we left the swamp, but as long as we didn't move they seemed to just ricochet about. It took three hours to finally reach a road, and another 45 minutes before a car came. The police had a fun time with it, until some Federal Guys who claimed to be part of the Fish and Wildlife something or another but probably weren't came by. They took both of us to a "secure facility" and interrogated the shit out of us, but we came out alright. I got the impression this wasn't the first time they had seen this. A fire burned down my old home. Couldn't guess on whether that was the government or those creeps. I talked to Jeanette again a few weeks ago, they told her Aunt in California that her family was killed in a boating accident.

I saw Jessie again too. As I was leaving West Palm, driving up I-95 to get the fuck out of there. He was standing on the edge of a pond staring at the road in a relatively nice looking polo shirt. He smiled when he saw my car and waved. I'm pretty sure his polo shirt was inside out.

2018.07.01 03:00 quacktuary Build Ready: Compact Build for Comp Games and Work

This will be my first build. I went from a macOS computing+console gaming combo, to an XPS 15 laptop for both computing and gaming, and finally to /buildapc since I don't need portability anymore.
The only games I've ever played or will play are in the 'competitive' category. Right now I'm in a hardcore Rocket League phase but I plan on getting back into the FPS world soon. Nothing overly demanding.
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
  1. Various online competitive games
  2. I run various stat/finance-based models for work and personal use
  3. Light photo editing via LR and PS.
  4. Must be minimal and unassuming aesthetically; don't want anything flashy or large. This will be sitting on top of my desk so the smalleboring-eblack-box-er the better.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)
I'll be using a 1440p 144hz IPS monitor (higher resolution for work productivity, IPS for photo work). When it comes to gaming, I am 99% about framerate and 1% about quality settings; I don't mind dropping settings down if it means achieving a constant 144+.
I mainly play RL and I dabble in some Fortnite, and my friends are convincing me to start playing R6S, CSGO, and PUBG with them. PUBG is the only one that stands out from the others, I know I can reach 144 on ~high settings with the others.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
$900 max, NOT including the cost of: internal storage, peripherals, or OS since I already have those.
I am planning on buying a used/pre-owned/refurbished GPU (as shown in the PCPP lists below). The manually entered price is based on local Craigslist ads, eBay completed listings, and hardwareswap posts.
In what country are you purchasing your parts?
Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.
I stuck with the stock cooler but I'm not sure if I should (or need) to get a separate one.
I've also explored getting a (used) Zotac 1070 or 1070 ti for around $300 and $400, respectively. It would help me 'future proof' it a bit more but I think it'd still be overkill for current use case and not as good value for the money compared to the 1060 6GB.
Very open to any and all constructive criticism on the selected parts and any changes you would personally make. Thank you!

2017.10.04 17:52 RadRoomThrowaway 139ft2 / $727-$777 bedroom in beautiful Shirlington, available 11/15!

Technically NOVA, but very close to DC. Pictures available here!
1 unfurnished bedroom available in 3-bedroom apartment featuring tons of natural light, carpeted flooring, a huge bathroom, and a wrap-around balcony overlooking the Army Navy golf course!
Dolley Madison Towers ( is located RIGHT off I-385, literally the next immediate turn off Exit 7B, and 1 mile from Shirlington Village (public library, Harris Teeter, AMC theater, post office, gym, bus bay, breweries, and restaurants).
We are looking for a young woman with a credit score of around 650. Rent would be pro-rated for move-in on the 15th of the month. If you are a smoker, you must agree to smoking only on the balcony (which is awesome anyway). Unfortunately, no pets are allowed in this building.
ROOM: 11'4" x 12'2" carpeted bedroom with 5 power outlets and 1 cable outlet. Features a large window with net and a lit, full-wall closet. On opposite side of the building from the freeway, facing the Army Navy Country Club golf course, which is extra beautiful when it's snowy/misty out. I've seen deer before.
ROOMMATES: Two twenty-something professional women. One stays in the Master Bedroom adjacent to you, while the other stays on the other side of the living room and shares a bathroom with you. You would also share two external closets, one large and one small, with both of them.
APARTMENT: Stove, oven, dishwasher, and microwave, are all functional and actively used. Washer and dryer, also functional and actively used, are in-unit. Water, electricity, and Wi-Fi Internet averages about $70 a month per person ($43 for Wi-Fi, $13 for electricity, and $14 for water). The Internet is great considered two of us stream constantly.
BATHROOM: Spacious shared bathroom with one roommate. Bathroom is handicap accessible (large and open; railing in shower and surrounding toilet). I've lived here for two years and the toilet has never clogged.
PARKING: For $50 (making rent $777) you would get reserved underground parking . This is my favorite part of this apartment because the spot is in the closest of the two garages and can be accessed without ever having to walk outside. If you don't have a car, giving up your parking spot will reduce your rent to $727.
ACCESSIBILITY: ART buses 84 and 87 pick up across the street (0.2 miles away) and can take you to the Pentagon City Metro Stop, which is across the street from the Pentagon Row Mall, in 5-10 minutes. And while the closest Metro Stop is Pentagon City, Crystal City has free parking after 4:30 and on weekends and holidays!
AND MORE: The apartment complex includes free access to the Business Center (read: free scanning/copying/printing), gym, and pool. The lobby also has free Wi-Fi. Apartment is access-controlled and its reception desk is always staffed. I'm legitimately going to miss the front desk because the people who work there are awesome. If you choose, you can have them send you an email whenever you receive a package and pay your bills automatically. There are always security guards roaming the area.
Send me a message if you're interested (and again, female) and we can set up for you to view the apartment and meet the your future roommates!

2017.07.29 08:30 souleaters22 Weird Black screen crash

Ok so i bought a pc off a guy from craigslist and the pc ran perfectly fine for about a week, And then after that I would get crashes that acted like a video driver crash were it goes black screen shoes the no video screen but then after that it just stays a black screen instead of loading back up.
here has what i have thought and tried ;
At first i thought it would be a driver issue going back to it seeming that it looked like what would happen with a driver crash. so I took and used DDU and removed it and reinstalled the most recent driver, and it crashed about 4 hours later.
Then I thought was my graphics card going bad so I took and ran superposition benchmark and got the same score ( I think like 20 points better actually ) then the person with the same setup as me See setup for details
So im not sure what it would be, any help or suggestions would be nice

2017.07.29 05:34 souleaters22 Weird black screen video driver type crash

Ok so i bought a pc off a guy from craigslist and the pc ran perfectly fine for about a week, And then after that I would get crashes that acted like a video driver crash were it goes black screen shoes the no video screen but then after that it just stays a black screen instead of loading back up.
here has what i have thought and tried ;

2017.06.05 20:25 FiredUpReadytoGo I've been more indecisive than Hamlet: Almost-settled $500 build?

Build Help/Ready:

The chatty version here, standard format below---
So I've been drafting this, my first PC build, since late Feb. Originally it was a G4560/RX 470 pairing, but I waited for more financial stability, and just as the RX 470/480/570/580 lines inflated, I got a job (as a public school teacher, though, y'all, so don't go crazy). I've just gotten into gaming this year as I slowly find specific titles that look fun, and I would like to go ahead and build.
My biggest question now is - is this build reasonably balanced? I was on the fence about dropping to a 1050 Ti considering my (decreasingly) ambivalent game status, but if an extra $100 will make the most appealing titles for me playable at a much higher standard, it IS worth it. Barely. And it's my understanding that a 1060 6GB is in fact a small bump from my original plan of 470 or 480, anyway. A couple other things are getting bumped as I do research: the mobo may get moved to a VDH because the extra 2 RAM slots come to about $10. And the PSU may be more than I need, but as a new builder who may upgrade again one day, it seems fully-modular G2 is nice. Overkill?
Finally... any more exciting case recs? I'm kiiiinda wanting a window to show off this new effort, but the N200 seems well situated and priced for my needs (which include a disc drive). I considered the Corsair Carbide 88R, and I know this is a more personal choice, so I'm mostly just wondering, any experience/other favorites?
I have read the sidebar and rules
Intended use:
Gaming: most demanding uses are prob PUBG (the only FPS I'm interested in) and somewhat modded Skyrim SE. I guess? I'm prob not going to play GTA.
Ideal Performance:
Considering my current 2011 craigslist find can't even open Skyrim SE, I'd be happy with a smooth performance on nearly any setting, but the highest I can get without going much over this budget at all is best.
$500 is ideal, willing to up a LITTLE if it's a huge bonus in value, and would love any advice folks have on whether I'm over-buying for my needs. The research I've done seems to lead to this rough skeleton, though.
Potential build here.

HEADS UP - No storage: I will probably move the 1TB HDD from my current PC to this build. I hope to just wait for a good sale for an SSD. Also already have a fine monitor, keyboard, etc. Haven't figured out OS plans yet.

2016.09.26 18:29 Xytherion007 [Build Complete] The "The best is yet to come" build

Imgur pics here:
I built computers before for friends but I never built one for myself. I used to have a HP Compaq 6005 Pro Microtower and decided to finally build one for myself (since the case is ancient and the PSU is a "BTX" form...apparently???? (wtf?) So I couldn't be any more happier with I finished building this! Spent roughly three or so hours from start to first boot and this computer works like a charm! The hardest part throughout the whole process I think would be the cable management, especially for the cables around the giant GTX 960 card. I remember there was "grinding" noise and the cable connected to the Front Audio header was the one at fault so I tucked it underneath the card and voila!
So why is this called "The best is yet to come?". Eventually when I save enough money and decide to go into hardcore gaming again (Used to have an ASUS G751JT w/ GTX 970M 3GB, sold it because the GTX 10xx series laptops came out. But now I'm holding back to see whether to transfer to desktop gaming or laptop gaming is worth it.) And maybe get an i5 or an i7. I'm kinda leaning more towards i5 since everyone says i5 is good enough for gaming but could an i7 help in games that are CPU intensive? (The Witcher 3, to name an example).

Parts I had lying around: 16GB DDR3 RAM (Kingston Hyper X), 480GB SSD (PNY), 64GB 42mm M.2 SSD, 2TB SSHD (Seagate), 320GB HDD (WD Blue Caviar), Rosewill N300 Wireless USB adapter, 100 ft. Ethernet cable.
Why did I pick these parts? (All parts bought on Amazon were Prime shipped) CPU: This build is supposedly a budget built so I went for the cheapest but most praised CPU. The G3258 seems to hold on its own just fine. I just played some games of Payday 2 (all graphics maxed out) and it held up like a champ, going at 60 FPS constantly to boot too! So I'm extremely surprised by the performance of this little guy. Motherboard: Thanks to CatfishChronic for suggesting the idea of a better motherboard than a B85. I went with this motherboard because I already have 4 x 4GB DDR3 RAM modules and I absolutely did not want to spend more money than it is necessary. The graphical interface is EXTREMELY pleasant! WAYYYYYY better than typical Windows 95-ish GUI's. GPU: I have been eyeballing a RX 460 (thanks to DarkusHydranoid for the idea) and in the end, decided to splurge roughly 20 bucks more and snag a GTX 960 4GB SSC that was in my area for 125 on Craigslist. During my first couple of games of Payday 2, the GPU didn't even go over 70 degrees Celsius at all. And the whole entire rig stayed pretty much silent, if not, emitted very little noise. Case: Lots of good reviews on PCPartPicker, $20 rebate on Newegg. The case itself is small! Doesn't show off at all, it's just a black square in my room. PSU: I was going for a EVGA SuperNova NEX but CatfishChronic suggested for something else more robust since I do plan to use this build to run a FileZilla personal FTP server. I decided to go with a 650W G2 instead of a 550W G2 because Amazon did not have any 550W in stock. I went for the 650W instead since it was just 10 bucks more and in stock.
Future plans: (Immediate future) More cable management; got a Cooler Master SickleFlow 120 coming in on Wednesday and I'm going to mount it on the top of the case to allow more air flow INTO the computer; got a XBOOM portable speaker because I don't want a pair of speakers, I just want one speaker for audio. (I REALLY REALLY liked the internal speaker the HP Compaq 6005 Pro Microtower had, simple, emits audio and POST codes.) I'm sure this won't emit POST codes at all so I'll have to snag a cheap motherboard speaker eventually. I made a post here about this issue (Reddit link here) but no one has responded to it at all.
(Far off into the future) Decide whether to continue into desktop gaming or laptop gaming. I REALLY liked the idea of portable gaming and taking my laptop to friends houses to play with them. Portability is a breaking factor for me so desktop gaming is still kinda iffy for me right now but also you have more freedom in managing your I'm gonna hold off on doing anything for a while and see what the future has in store. If I decide to stick to desktop gaming, I'll get an i5/i7 (K processor definitely but I still have to figure out how to overclock this Pentium processor) and a better GPU. (GTX 10xx series? Or maybe...something else that will be released in the future...?)

2016.08.14 06:44 IPatEussy What is my PC worth?

NOTE: Before you guys get in my ass, I did post in the /hardwareswap sub-reddit underneath the "WEEK OF 8/7 PRICE CHECK" thread but it's been hours and not one person has responded to me.
I just want to know, to be real, what my CPU is worth if I were to sell it on eBay, Reddit or Craigslist? I feel like I overbuilt for my needs which are 1080p video rendering.

I wish didn't buy an expensive MoBo, Cooler, Case, Processor and PSU.
It was a first build and those parts were recommended by someone on the sub, but now that I know I little more weeks later, I would like to try a second build, assuming I don't lose too much money selling this one. If I were to do a second build, it would be something like this:

I would get the around the same performance (maybe 10-15% dropoff) in 1080p 60fps video editing/rendering and save over $600. I want to get a used GTX 970 cause I think that'll handle well and push prices down even more to around $700 in savings. What do you guys think? The CPU I have right now is just FAR too fast for what I use it for.
Anyways guys, give me some numbers.
Also, post a sub reddit besides /hardwareswap where I could either sell or get a price check (if there is one).

2016.07.07 14:55 unixmonkey115 [NS-CAN] Questions regarding service similar to airbnb

Hi all, I had an idea a few weeks ago about a site similar to airbnb. For obvious reasons I'm going to be as vague as possible, but here is what I'm wondering. The site that I am planning is, in essence, the same as airbnb (it wouldn't be a competitor, but it's similar enough that it should be a good enough example). If I was matching customers (individuals that want to rent rooms / houses) with owners (people who own rooms / houses that wish to rent them out), what kind of liability would I be looking at, if any? I would assume that I would be liable for any technical issues that caused problems (such as double payments being taken out, or messed up ads due to software bugs, or things like that), but what about liability with the "product" itself? If Person A rents a house from Person B, and the house isn't as advertised, would there be any liability on my part? What if Person A sets fire to the house, or Person B double booked (say, using another site like craigslist. I would guess that there would be liability on my part if the system would allow double bookings), or if Person A was injured while in the house or using some items that came with the rental, like a stroller. I would assume that there would need to be disclaimers that would limit my liability, but would I be able to completely absolve myself of liability using the proper terminology? Obviously I would need to speak with a lawyer to get some specific advice before going too far, but I don't want to pay for a lawyer and start building the site if I wouldn't be able to protect myself at all.
My other question is, if I am in Nova Scotia and I start the business and have listings from around the world, would that be more complicated from a legal perspective than if I only did business in North America, or just Canada, or just Nova Scotia?

2016.04.08 11:42 ucrfunk When do you Give Up?

6 years ago I formed a band in college with a few of my friends. From the first time we jammed, I knew we had something special. Our sound was different . We created music within multiple genres, from bossa nova, to funk soul, to rock and jazz. We also had a unique look, we were from different ethnic backgrounds. I knew we could make it.
It was great those days, jamming during the week, smoking weed, and partying. Everyone enjoyed seeing us perform. However as a result, I had mediocre grades.
After graduation, there was a long break. This was because of a family death within our singer, Kris's family. His grandfather passed, as well as his grandmother two years before. He moved back with his mother to his original state of North Carolina. I called him occasionally to check up on him and he always was feeling down. He was multiple jobs to support his family and hated living there.
I still saw the potential in our band. I still believed we can make it. Why did I want it? Because I believe it was the greatest job ever. You get to play music around the world, and get adored be everyone. I would have daydreams of this dream. And also to prove some people wrong.
I hand wrote a letter to Kris and asked the other members to also sign it. I added some money too to help him out. It said "we still believe."
He came back to California 4 months later.
I was so ecstatic when came back. We immediately went to the studio to record a 5 Track EP. The whole process was supposed to take a month. It took 10 months..
drummer had changed since Kris had left. His passion for music was gone. He kept messing up. After 9 months, we decided to kick him out and hire a substitute. EP came out terrible.
During that process, Me and Kris both suffered a lot. I socially isolated myself. I turned down parties, vacations, girlfriends. I became obsessed with getting it finished no matter what. I developed chronic insomnia. I only slept about twice a week. I gained weight and insecurities. I funded the whole project and spent roughly $5,000. I started to doubt.
Kris was jobless and homeless, staying with friends. I would help him financially but he was homesick. His mother also started to get sick.
Our bassist stopped talking to us and left the group.
We were still determined though. We convinced our bassist to come back. We found a new drummer who was even better than our last. We began to finally play shows in Hollywood. We were on a high for a little bit, packing out shows every weekend. To top things off, Kris was also selected to be on The Voice! I began to believe again.
On March 9, 2015, Kris's mom passed from a heart attack.
He was a broken man. He believed he had sacrificed her for music. Having no father or siblings, he was now alone in the world. The Voice also dropped him the next day.
We gave him space for a few months and he then returned, more determined than ever. Things were different now.
During that time, I dropped acid for the first time. I had a kundalini experience. I spoke to the Source and experienced the present moment. How perfect it was, how we are all collected, and each have a purpose. From then on, I desired to succeed not for the fame, but to help others. To spread a message of oneness and love. I wanted to use the elevated status that the elite have put towards entertainers against them. I wanted to spread a message of love and positivity.
We found a keyboardist on craigslist. We've been searching for one for months and now finally had a the missing piece. We sound twice as good now.
The band was no back, but our audiences weren't. The show turnouts were mediocre. It made sense since we had no acceptable music out.
We went to the studio again and failed miserably once more. A two track EP that took way too long to make that also sounded terrible. I took it ok, but Kris was suicidal.
Since his mom passed, he has dedicated his life to this. Outside of myself, the rest of the band doesn't seem to want success as much. They began to flake on practices.
Now all this brings us to the present where something amazing happened. We went in to the studio to record and managed to do it in 1 day! I was shocked. God truly blessed us that day. It's our best sounding record yet.
Unfortunately, band morale is still low. I've been grinding so hard behind the scenes to make up for my insecurities as a guitar player. I get the gigs, set up the studio dates, promote, host practice, etc. These were jobs I also had to take over from all the slacking. I want to call people out but we're such buddies that we are afraid to criticize one another. Its gotten to the point where we don't even speak.
he 2 original members, Nate and Kris, don't talk to me. They seemed burned out. Kris confided to me and said he's been thinking of quitting for 6 months. He's only still in this because of me. He came back to Cali to do music via burgundy skies. He wants to still do music, but by himself. He also told me that his mom passing was not a sacrifice and that I should not feel guilty. That is an evil thought. I take no guilt.
I'm am different now. I definitely don't have the same enthusiasm as I once had. Being in this band for 6 years, and what do I have to show? Only one song that I'm proud of? I've doubting now if this is possible. The music scene is different nowadays. Bands aren't big any more. It's all DJ's and Rappers. At best there's one rock band who makes it but that's just one song. There's a lot of competition in this industry and I believe you really have to be lucky. There are tons of amazing artists who never see the spotlight.
Its hard to be in a band. Everyone has their own schedule and priorities. I've also realized that every member of the band must be 100%. In honesty, promoting, performing etc. If even one person slacks, its a domino effect and things don't get done.
I'm currently studying to get into dental school. Both of my parents are doctors. They've worked so hard and provided me and my brother a life with no monetary struggles. I don't want to let them down. I know I can get in if I really study hard for the upcoming exam. My plan is to dedicate the next 3 months on passing it. If I get in, I want work on my own music and jam occasionally with friends but not as a band. for the remaining year before going to dental school. Either way, I'll be leaving music (for the time being.
For me this plan makes perfect sense.
However, the question that keeps me up at night is this---
Should I keep doing trying to fix something that me and Kris have sacrificed so much for? Or should I go the back to school?
I'm worried that I may live life with regrets though. Now that I have a song that I'm proud of, should I keep going? Or should I just keep it as a happy memory to look back on when I become a doctor?
To keep going would mean to recruit Kris and Nate back, and I saw how that turned out. I don't want to quit, but I also don't want to make the same mistake twice. I can't force these guys to want this.
I've recently contemplated taking acid before making this decision for a different perspective. I'm not sure if its wise to make a decision this big after an acid trip tough.

2015.08.17 23:39 saadat4533 [Build Complete] My budget ticket to Ascension: Project Cortana 2015

First and foremost, Pictures of her Majesty
BONUS: Timelapse Build Video!
First and foremost, I would like to thank this entire thread for inspiring and helping me ascend. A long time Xbox fanboy, I tried to pretend that the world of custom PCs didn't exist as I tirelessly played matchmaking in Halo 3. After neglecting my inner desire to build a rig, I decided that this summer after my sophomore year was the time to punch my ticket to pcmasterrace heaven. I needed something that could play CSGO, type my essays, and look badass. And, just like that, parts began to fall into my lap.
While moving out of my dorm after finals, I spotted some molex connectors poking out of a plastic bag next to all of the chairs, lamps, and accessories that the other students left behind. When I went in to inspect, an XFX 650w psu greeted me, undamaged and apparently working. After I rushed home and played around with some paper clips, I stared at what was the basis for my build. I bought some paracord for 8 dollars, and spent my time learning how to sleeve a PSU, which came out wonderfully for my first time!
Even with my shoestring budget, parts continued to fall into my lap. A craigslist deal landed me a pristine Corsair 450D, a beautiful case that achieved the look I was looking for. My friend back home bought two Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming cards for his personal rig, and when he couldn't make it fit, offered one to me for $215. Considering I was looking at nothing more than a 2g 960 for this build, that part was a godsend. The motherboard and cpu were bundled together as part of a craigslist snag. After debating whether or not to buy a new i5/board, the reddit community here advised me to take the deal for $160, shipped. Considering the board supports pcie gen3 and (3) front panel usb3 headers, I was more than happy. I was hesitant about Ivy bridge, but a modest OC and some time playing Crysis 2 (Old, I know, but the only game I had available to me) put my doubts to bed. A recycled laptop HDD and lifesaving sales (thanks /buildapcsales) helped bring my system costs down to around $550, including an OS. A proper mouse and monitor topped off my total expenses to about 700 dollars, which I think is hella impressive considering how she looks. I named her Cortana, a nod to my former peasantry and the AI living in my windows 10 OS.

Cortana booted on her first try, and pulls strong through any task I might throw at her. I had so much fun building this PC, and all I can think about it convincing my friends to catch the bug and ascend with me!
For those of you who may not have the means to just throw $$$$ at a PC, be resourceful. Make deals, use craigslist, reach out to people, don't be afraid to take your time and go with your gut. Patience will yield you a glorious machine, regardless of your budget.
Critique, comment, and PM me if you want to get me out of Nova 3 in CSGO! Now, time to change my flair.

2015.05.14 01:01 PowerLemons Ways to advertise local phone repair service?

I run RevivedIT Mobile Repair, a phone repair service in Nova Scotia, Canada that I started up only 5 days ago. I'm running this from my own home, which is what other people are doing in my area. I'm only repairing iPhones for now, and I'm looking to expand to Android and other types of phones once this becomes big enough.
I coded my own e-commerce website to allow for features that sets my service apart from everyone else. I've created a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Yelp business page, and I'm waiting for my website to be indexed on Google Maps and Google. I also created a listing on the local classifieds (Kijiji, the equivalent of Craigslist from the US in Canada).
Unlike other services, people can book their repairs online instead of calling/emailing. Booking is what other repair service owners in my area are doing it. Customers can also pay with PayPal online, along with in-person with Credit Card and Cash. It's convenience, along with competing prices, that sets my service apart from everyone else's.
How do I use these factors into advertising my business? It's only been 5 days, but I feel like I'm not doing enough to put it out there - especially with not making a single sale yet.

2014.09.05 14:42 Nova_Couple Impossible for young couple to rent room

My wife and I (we both are 22) have an apartment in Ashburn that we can no longer afford. The lease is ending soon and we're looking for a room to rent on craigslist. We're not tied to Ashburn, we're looking just about anywhere in Northern Virginia.
Most posts explicitly state NO COUPLES. Many homeowners that don't specify will shut me down immediately after I mention my wife. This issue persists even with large basements for rent - what do they expect? One person to live in a huge basement?
We both have careers and no criminal records, this can't be too hard. How do I find a sub $1000 room or space for rent in NOVA for my wife and I?

2014.08.07 22:21 londoncitydevz Do you wish you had never met 'that' someone?

These past two years have been really hard for me. I used to be so happy and in control of my life, but now I struggle to get along with people, or make new friends. I also find myself questioning myself, and feeling hopeless. But yet the year before that was one of the best years of my life.
I've always struggled with weight problems which in turn messed with my self esteem and confidence. I had tried to lose weight by myself and with the encouragement of my parents I had some success but not as much as i'd hoped, which would always make me feel low. Then one day, my parents suggested this weight loss camp/academy in the US. I was excited, and long story short I lost 130 pounds in about 11 months. I had become a beautiful person both inside and out, and was the happiest I'd ever been. I finally had confidence and felt like the world was my oyster. I had spent 11 hard months working my ass off;my days were full of sweat and tears, but better yet, accomplishment. I left there feeling great (ran a mile in 7minutes!), feeling even more excited because I was finally heading out on my own, getting my own apartment, and starting university! This was the first time in a very long time men had started paying attention to me, and I dated quite a few in a few short months, but I was staying active, eating healthy, and enjoying life.
Then I met him. It was a warm October night. We had met online, yet liked each other instantly. I'm from Nova Scotia, and one of my favourite shows is Trailer Park Boys (lol) and he reminded me of Ricky which I found hilarious, so we really hit it off. He was a very nice person at first, caring and funny, yet he would hold grudges over the silliest things. He was my very first serious relationship.
He was a very avid weed and cigarette smoker and pretty soon I found myself getting high all day and all night, when I had only ever smoked weed once or twice before I met him. I still ate my healthy foods and worked out, but yet was met with huge criticism by him. The next month he moved in, and his mother was in the hospital dying so anything mean that was said or done by him I ignored, and just tried to support him. I was not allowed friends, and I found myself losing contact with all my amazing friends I had made in the States. Then he started putting me down, calling me fat, worthless, and the cuddles and kisses stopped. He started sleeping on the couch, and snapping when I tried to initiate convo. I'm the type of person that would do anything for those I love, so I found myself stupidly spending my money on things for him, trying to surprise him, cheer him up, get him high ect. I didn't have enough money for healthy foods anymore and found myself gaining weight, which in turn made me stop working out. I'm not sure what depression feels like, but I felt pretty shitty.
Then the accusations started. I wasn't even allowed to be on my phone because I was "talking to guys" and "meeting up and sleeping with them". I remember one day when he was at work, I was talking to my friend Alex about it, and she told me that it sounded like he was feeling guilty and probably had something to hide himself. I'm not one to go through people's things, but I checked his facebook and email. I found what Alex suspected; emails and messages to girls asking to meet up, calling them sexy, I even found emails between him and a hooker off of craigslist! I even found some male looking for male ads on craigslist that he had replied to. I also found emails to his ex saying he loved her and missed her. I felt betrayed and hurt and confronted him, only to be met with "how dare you go through my stuff" and him being the mind-f*ck that he is, somehow twisted this around on me and I just dropped it. Ever since then our relationship has been loveless, and hurtful. He would treat me like dirt in front of his friends, would never let me make any decisions, and worst of all he would physically hit me and belittle me by calling me a pig and snorting at me. He ended up raping me once when he was drunk, and that was probably the lowest I've ever been.
I don't know how to explain it, but he has this way of twisting things and messing with my head which makes me somehow think that everything is my fault. I gained weight slowly but surely, and I felt like I was trapped. I had no friends left, and I lived in an entirely different province than my family. I eventually ended up dropping out of school and losing my job. I gained most of my weight back, and didn't want to see my family and old friends out of pure embarrassment. I was so depressed with life, but stayed with him because he was all I had left, and I was terrified of being alone.
I had had it all, and I pissed it all away for some guy. I have let down myself, my friends, and most importantly; my parents. That's what hurts the most...they are AMAZING, have given me every opportunity in life, and are still there for me no matter what, but they are getting old and I'm starting to feel like my life was a waste, when all I want is to make them proud.
I just wish I could go back to that warm October night and 'un-meet him'. I wish I would have gone for a walk by the ocean like I had planned to, instead of meeting him.
I am moving to a different area of town at the end of this month, and have been getting help from a therapist who has helped me to motivate myself and see that I am worth it, and I CAN be happy. It is going to be a long journey but I am now motivated and hopefully come out on top!!
Thanks for reading, :).

2014.07.12 07:46 DWillms Wanting to get into canoe camping, found some used canoe's locally, help me sort through?

Hey all, after your advice on the thread yesterday (in canoeing) I've decided to pick up something used just to try out for this year at least. I'm planning on 2 person canoe camping with my girlfriend on this thing, but we aren't taken it in any thing crazy, just calm rivers, maybe the odd portage or two. I'm not really sure what to look for, but here is what I've found. They are all nothing too fancy, but I'd like to keep it under about $600. I'm located in Sarnia, Ontario (very far southwest so not that close to Algonquin, etc), but close to Port Huron, Flint, Detroit, etc.
Local stuff:
1) 15' Voyageur Abiti
-Seems a bit pricier, is the crack anything to worry about? Heavy...
2) Sportspal
-Seems overpriced/dated?
3) Big Chief
-Cheap, Heavy?
4) NovaCraft Tripper
-A bit pricey?
5) Cedar strip canoe
-Pretty. Too expensive? Weight/durability?
USA Boats:
1) Old Town Guide 160
-Some extras, decent price, seems like a heavier boat at 86lbs!
2) American Fiber-Glass
-Cheap/old, probably better options?
3) 17' Sea Nymph
-Old, not sure about aluminum? Seems expensive
4) 16' Fiberglass
-Seems really beat up
5) Coleman RamX-15
-Nothing fancy, but seems to suggest it's heavy but pretty durable
6) 17' Aluminum
-Again, old, aluminum, dented
7) 14' Coleman RamX
-Again, nothing fancy. Is 14' too short?
8) Old Town Guide 147
-Heavy, betteworse than the Old Town 160?
9) Old Wood Canoe
-Beautiful looking, I assume heavy? What's the durability like?
10) 1970's Grumman
-Aluminum, comes with sail kit which is cool.
11) 17' Coleman Ram-X -ANOTHER Ram-X? Ha
12) 14' Old Town Guide
-Cheaper than the others
13) Old Town Discovery 169
-Cheap for an old town?
14) Old Town 169
-Has some accessories, looks like it's more of a fishing vessel?
15) Grumman Tracker
16) Grumman 1740C
-Stored outside
17) Radisson Aluminum
-45lbs true? Seems pricey at $700.
Alright, that's all of them, sorry about the link dump but I have really no idea what I'm looking for. If you have any advice on anything (material, shape, length, etc) I'd love to hear it!

2014.07.12 03:21 DWillms Found some used canoes for sale locally, help me sort?

Hey all, after your advice on the thread yesterday I've decided to pick up something used just to try out for this year at least. I'm planning on 2 person camping with my girlfriend on this thing, but we aren't taken it in any thing crazy, just calm rivers, maybe the odd portage or two. I'm not really sure what to look for, but here is what I've found. They are all nothing too fancy, but I'd like to keep it under about $600. I'm located in Sarnia, Ontario (very far southwest), but close to Port Huron, Flint, Detroit, etc.
Local stuff:
1) 15' Voyageur Abiti
-Seems a bit pricier, is the crack anything to worry about? Heavy...
2) Sportspal
-Seems overpriced/dated?
3) Big Chief
-Cheap, Heavy?
4) NovaCraft Tripper
-A bit pricey?
5) Cedar strip canoe
-Pretty. Too expensive?
USA Boats:
1) Old Town Guide 160
-Some extras, decent price, seems like a heavier boat at 86lbs!
2) American Fiber-Glass
-Cheap/old, probably better options?
3) 17' Sea Nymph
-Old, not sure about aluminum? Seems expensive
4) 16' Fiberglass
-Seems really beat up
5) Coleman RamX-15
-Nothing fancy, but seems to suggest it's heavy but pretty durable
6) 17' Aluminum
-Again, old, aluminum, dented
7) 14' Coleman RamX
